Global Groove

Global Groove was a collaborative piece by Nam June Paik and John Godfrey. Paik, amongst other artists who shared the same vision in the 1960s, saw the potential in the television beyond it being a one-sided medium to present programs and commercials. Instead, he saw it more as a place to facilitate a free flow of information exchange. He wanted to strip away the limitations from copyright system and network restrictions and bring in a new TV culture where information could be accessed inexpensively and conveniently. The full length of the piece ran 28 minutes and was first broadcasted in January 30, 1974 on WNET.

Genesis: In Concert

Genesis In Concert, filmed in 1976 during the band's tour supporting the album A Trick Of The Tail, was the first long-form concert video featuring Phil Collins as lead vocalist, taking over from Peter Gabriel who had left the previous year. Supplementing Collins at percussion during this tour was Yes & King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford, whom Collins was a fan of and who volunteered for the job until a permanent touring drummer could be found. The movie combines film of two shows: one at the Apollo Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland on July 9, 1976, and one at Bingley Hall in Staffordshire, England on July 10, 1976. This film tells (using modern day interviews and archival footage and sound tapes) the story of how in 1967, while his band The Beach Boys triumphantly toured abroad, Brian Wilson was trying to push the boundaries of conventional pop music with a new follow-up to the Beach Boys' cutting-edge mega-hit, Pet Sounds. The new album was to be called "SMiLE". SMiLE pushed the envelope both musically and lyrically, and was supposed to out-do the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper record. But Brian wasn't able to sell the project to his band-mates when they returned. The project was shelved and Wilson's well-documented decline into depression, drug abuse, recluseness, and obesity had begun. Thirty-odd years later, Wilson announced that in 2004, SMiLE would be performed live in its entirety in London. This film tells the story of a damaged but healing artist bringing his greatest work to light.

"Time, forward!" - two orchestral suites by George Sviridov, published for the first time in 1968 (first suite) and in 1977 (second suite). The suites were created on the basis of music for the film "Time, Forward!" By Mikhail Schweitzer (based on the novel of the same name by Valentin Kataev, shot in 1965, released in 1966), dedicated to the construction of the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine. From the first suite, the most famous part is "Time, forward!". Subsequently, it was used in a number of films, in television and radio programs, documentary films about the first five-year plans, industrialization, and post-war reconstruction. Sergei Oskolkov composed his suite: "Time, back!" The film is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the revolution in Russia.

Porcupine Tree: Rockpalast 2005 - Live Music Hall Köln

With melodic progressive rock and socially critical lyrics, the British band Porcupine Tree also gained a large fan base in Germany at the turn of the millennium. A harsh and gentle celebration of your capabilities, your limits, and your destiny.” As well as being the Director for the music video, Black Dahlia was also Producer, Art Director, Choreographer, and Concept creator for the project. Donning various characters, Black Dahlia embodies performance art and its mediums such as contortion, mime, surrealism, Dada, the avant-garde, and body horror. ‘Bodyguard’ follows Black Dahlia in various theatrical forms and her journey to transformation through reanimation that looks reminiscent of a John Waters film. It also features cameos from Melbourne-based artists, Bura Bura as Dr Barget Hower, Manda Wolf as Dr Avanti and Cong Josie as Dr Cong.

The dancers glide and rotate untroubled by gravity against a slowly changing starfield background. Their movements are accompanied by music scored for a small ensemble of woodwind and percussion.

Frank Zappa: The Freak Out List

On the liner notes to Freak Out!, the 1967 debut album by Zappa's original band the Mothers of Invention, Zappa listed some seventy-two names on the liner notes and cited them as influences. The Freak Out List intends to explore who these artists are and what influence they had on Zappa's music. This listing encompasses all sorts of music, from classical composer Edgar Varese to R&B star Johnny "Guitar" Watson to jazzman Eric Dolphy to flamenco guitarist Sabicas. You can hear for instance, how the esoteric classical influence of Varese shaped Zappa's long-form epics like "Lumpy Gravy" or how Dolphy's instrumental prowess led Zappa to incorporate jazz-fusion on albums like Weasels Ripped My Flesh! (1970), which even included a song titled "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue." Interviews with various Zappa biographers and music historians as well as musicians George Duke, Ian Underwood, and Don Preston, all of whom played in the Mothers at one time or another, help add additional context.
