The boy and the tree

One evening close to Christmas, the tree, having seen the splendidly trimmed Christmas trees standing in the windows of nearby houses, and longing to be as beautiful as they are, begs the boy to trim it too. But the boy has neither ornaments nor money to buy any, in fact he has nothing. How can he make this withered, shriveled tree look beautiful, there in the middle of a filthy, freezing pavement? And yet this night will prove to be a very different night from every other. It will be a night when dreams come true, a night of enchantment and magic.

La Condizione Umana: Parte II – Cammino verso l'eternità

Kaji (Tatsuya Nakadai) diventa recluta nell'esercito imperiale giapponese, in seguito alla chiamata di leva (con cui si concludeva Nessun amore è più grande, primo capitolo della trilogia "La condizione umana"). Continua la sua lotta umanitaria contro i soprusi e le ingiustizie del sistema militare, sia da parte degli ufficiali, sia tra veterani e reclute, in particolare quando il debole e pavido soldato Obara Nitôhei (Kunie Tanaka) viene preso di mira e umiliato per essere crollato durante una spedizione, tanto da indurlo al suicidio. Un giorno si presenta al campo Michiko (Michiyo Aratama), moglie di Kaji, e viene dato loro il permesso di passare una notte insieme in un magazzino. Kaji, che è stimato per il suo coraggio nonostante le idee da comunista, viene nominato caporale, anche per cercare di piegarlo più facilmente agli ideali bellici e patriottici, fino al momento della battaglia al fronte contro i russi.

One can determine a line in Tscherkassky’s oeuvre which turns around a game with filmic presentation, with degrees of recognisability — with the only-just and the not-any-more. Just to see desire. An example of this is Erotique. One sees swirling pictures, parts of a woman’s face, red lips, eyes in cyclical fragments of movement. Often it is difficult to tell which part of the body one actually sees (whoever wants to can see/imagine/think sexual organs and sexual acts.) The gaze gets hung up on partial objects, no integral, whole body to think about. No body, whose representation was always one of the problems in cinema.
