Well worth the wait, the sets feature visually striking projections interlaced with lush flowering fields, and the first act delivers one of opera’s most exciting dance medleys, a portion of which went mainstream in the 1950s when Tony Bennett recorded “Stranger in Paradise.”

Nabucco

Nabucco re di Babilonia, conquista la città di Gerusalemme; a nulla è valsa la cattura di Fenena (figlia di Nabucco) da parte di Zaccaria, il Gran Pontefice. Rivedendola, Ismaele (nipote del re di Gerusalemme Sedecia), cede al suo amore e la libera. Tornati in Babilonia, Fenana si è convertita alla causa degli ebrei e Abigaille (che ha appena scoperto di essere figlia illegittima di Nabucco) imbeccata dal Gran Sacerdote di Belo della notizia della morte in guerra del re, ne approfitta per salire al trono. Ma Nabucco non è morto, anzi torna e in preda alla follia si paragona a un dio, scatenando un fulmine che lo colpisce. Abigaille quindi prende la corona, fa rinchiudere suo padre e condanna a morte Fenena e tutto il popolo ebraico. Nabucco però rinsavisce e - con l'ausilio del fidato Abdallo - riprende il trono, libera Fenana e gli ebrei, e si converte al giudaismo. Abigaille, si toglie la vita avvelenandosi.

Lucia di Lammermoor

Due divi assoluti al Metropolitan per il capolavoro di Gaetano Donizetti: Joan Sutherland e Alfredo Kraus rendono questa edizione di Lucia di Lammermoor un evento memorabile, una di quelle serate che resteranno nella memoria degli appassionati d'opera. La scena della pazzia di Lucia è di straordinaria intensità; il finale è cantato da Kraus con classe e partecipazione impareggiabili. Accanto a ottimi interpreti delle parti di contorno, si distinguono anche la concertazione di Bonynge, incisiva ma sempre rispettosa delle voci, e l'efficace messinscena di Donnell, che si nuove nel solco della tradizione.
