Due divi assoluti al Metropolitan per il capolavoro di Gaetano Donizetti: Joan Sutherland e Alfredo Kraus rendono questa edizione di Lucia di Lammermoor un evento memorabile, una di quelle serate che resteranno nella memoria degli appassionati d'opera. La scena della pazzia di Lucia è di straordinaria intensità; il finale è cantato da Kraus con classe e partecipazione impareggiabili. Accanto a ottimi interpreti delle parti di contorno, si distinguono anche la concertazione di Bonynge, incisiva ma sempre rispettosa delle voci, e l'efficace messinscena di Donnell, che si nuove nel solco della tradizione.

Un Rigoletto indimenticabile, quello che va in scena al Metropolitan nel novembre 1977. Nel ruolo del titolo spicca uno dei protagonisti di quegli anni al teatro di New York: Cornell MacNeil, capace di donare al personaggio del buffone una tinta umanissima, ma senza trascurarne il lato malvagio. Placido Domingo è un Duca strepitoso, per mezzi vocali e travolgente carica vitale; Ileana Cotrubas una Gilda perfetta, fragile e implorante. Di alto livello anche il resto del cast, nel quale spiccano il possente Monterone di John Cheek e l'avvenente Maddalena di Isola Jones. La direzione di James Levine si distingue per un impressionante, serratissimo ritmo drammatico.

La trasposizione ambientale, che da Siviglia si sposta alle eleganti ville venete palladiane, crea un'impostazione scenografica di notevole fascino. Com'è noto, il libretto di Da Ponte usato da Mozart è una delle tante versioni del mito di Don Giovanni, il famoso gentiluomo spagnolo che calpesta ogni legge morale per appagare il suo spirito d'avventura. Finirà infatti trascinato all'inferno dalla statua del Commendatore che lui stesso aveva ucciso in duello mentre questi cercava di difendere l'onore della figlia. Losey, uno fra i registi più legati al teatro e alla letteratura, rende con efficacia i risvolti morali e a volte anche tragici di quella che troppo spesso è stata considerata unicamente come "opera buffa" e che Mozart aveva invece voluto indicare come "dramma giocoso".

Nabucco

Nabucco re di Babilonia, conquista la città di Gerusalemme; a nulla è valsa la cattura di Fenena (figlia di Nabucco) da parte di Zaccaria, il Gran Pontefice. Rivedendola, Ismaele (nipote del re di Gerusalemme Sedecia), cede al suo amore e la libera. Tornati in Babilonia, Fenana si è convertita alla causa degli ebrei e Abigaille (che ha appena scoperto di essere figlia illegittima di Nabucco) imbeccata dal Gran Sacerdote di Belo della notizia della morte in guerra del re, ne approfitta per salire al trono. Ma Nabucco non è morto, anzi torna e in preda alla follia si paragona a un dio, scatenando un fulmine che lo colpisce. Abigaille quindi prende la corona, fa rinchiudere suo padre e condanna a morte Fenena e tutto il popolo ebraico. Nabucco però rinsavisce e - con l'ausilio del fidato Abdallo - riprende il trono, libera Fenana e gli ebrei, e si converte al giudaismo. Abigaille, si toglie la vita avvelenandosi.
