Shalimar

Kumar, a thief by profession poses as the son of Raja Bahadur Singh to accept an invitation to the island of Sir John Locksley. The guests include K.P.W. Iyengar aka Romeo, Dr. Dubari, Colonel Columbus, and Countess Sylvia Rasmussen. A stunned Kumar finds out that all of these invitees are master criminals. Kumar's guise does not fool anyone, nevertheless Sir John permits him to stay on. The reason why John has invited them is to find a successor to take his place as he is dying of cancer. He feels that one of his invitees can be trusted to take his place and for this he has arranged for them to steal a ruby (Shalimar) worth 135 crores of rupees. This gem is placed in a secure room within his palace, which is alarmed, and guarded. He challenges one of them to steal the Shalimar - but if anyone fails then they are killed by the security system. Pitted against such veterans, it looks like Kumar has got himself into a bind that he may not come out of alive.

Zatoichi

Giappone XIX sec. Zatôichi, massaggiatore cieco col vizio del gioco a dadi e micidiale maestro di spada, arriva in un villaggio i cui abitanti sono taglieggiati dal clan dei malvagi Ginzo. Col suo amico Shinkichi (Taka) s'imbatte nelle sorelle Naruto, Okinu (Yuko) e Osei (Daigorô), che si fingono geishe in attesa di vendicare il massacro dei genitori. Le aiuterà a fare giustizia. 1° film di Kitano in costume, del genere chambara (cappa e spada). Tratte dai popolari racconti di Kan Shimozawa, le avventure di Zatôichi furono rilanciate negli anni '60 dall'attore Shintaro Katsu che tra il '62 e l'86 interpretò il personaggio in una serie TV e in una ventina di lungometraggi per le sale.

Rashomon

Kyoto, periodo Heian. Un boscaiolo, un monaco e un vagabondo si interrogano su una vicenda, l'assassinio di un samurai e lo stupro di sua moglie per mano del bandito Tajômaru, che li ha coinvolti come testimoni. Mentre si susseguono le dichiarazioni dei protagonisti davanti a un tribunale sulla loro versione dei fatti, la verità anziché emergere sembra vieppiù allontanarsi. In un Giappone ancora dilaniato dai lasciti del dopoguerra, Kurosawa Akira ritorna a un'altra epoca di morte e sofferenza, quel periodo Heian in cui di fronte alla porta del tempio di Rashô non scorrevano che sangue, violenza e frode.

I sette samurai

Dopo la pioggia

Un gruppo di viaggiatori è bloccato in una piccola locanda di campagna quando il fiume si allaga durante le forti piogge. Mentre il maltempo continua, le tensioni aumentano tra i viaggiatori intrappolati nella locanda. Ihei Misawa è un ronin, un samurai senza padrone, le cui abilità con la spada lo rendono un prezioso impiegato, ma la cui brutale onestà e mancanza di grazie sociali gli impediscono di stare con un maestro troppo a lungo. Dopo aver spartito l'impero fra i suoi tre figli, il vecchio feudatario Hidetora Ichimonji assiste allo scatenarsi di una guerra fratricida che porterà a conseguenze imprevedibili per tutta la prestigiosa casata.

Sanjuro

Il seguito della "Sfida del samurai" è un buon film, anche se non all'altezza dell'originale. Girato da Kurosawa per sfruttare il successo del precedente, risulta, comunque, un film valido e divertente, nelle corde del Kurosawa più avventuroso.

La sfida del samurai

Nel XVII secolo un samurai vagabondo arriva in un villaggio insanguinato dalla guerra tra due clan e, con machiavellica strategia, diventa l'ago della bilancia mettendo gli uni contro gli altri. Splendido film d'azione in chiave ironica e di ritmo snello, ma anche limpida parabola sulla cupidigia del denaro con risvolti ironici e una lontana parentela con Goldoni (Arlecchino servitore di due padroni). Yojimbo (che significa "guardia del corpo") è il modello su cui Sergio Leone ricalcò Per un pugno di dollari e Walter Hill Ancora vivo. Ma, forse, all'origine di tutto c'è Red Harvest (Piombo e sangue, 1929) di Dashiell Hammett.

Kagemusha - L'ombra del guerriero

Durante le lotte per la conquista del potere a Kyoto, nel Giappone del XVI secolo, il principe Shinge Takeda, ambizioso e valoroso, muore. Prevedendo la riscossa dei rivali, trattenuti dalla sua fama, il morente chiede al fratello Nobukado e al figlio Katsuyori, e a tutti i generali del clan, di rimanere nei propri territori e di nascondere la sua morte. Nobukado, trovato un ladro in procinto di venire crocifisso e avendolo salvato per la sua somiglianza con Shinge, convince tutti a farlo passare per il principe morto. "Kagemusha" - che significa: "ombra di Shinge" - accetta per interesse e tenta di approfittare della situazione.
