Maria Callas’ legendary live performances from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, from 1962 and 1964 celebrate her triumphant return to the Covent Garden stage. Repertoire from these performances include Verdi: Tu che le vanità (Don Carlo), Bizet: Habanera & Séguedille (Carmen) and Puccini: Tosca (Act II complete). Her vivid portrayals of the tragic Elisabeth de Valois, the tantalising Carmen, and her vulnerable Tosca (directed by Franco Zeffirelli) captured the hearts of the London audiences. Turandot

Lo storico, sfarzoso allestimentodi Franco Zeffirelli, le grandi voci di Eva Marton e Placido Domingo fanno di questa "Turandot", andata in scena al Metropolitan nel 1987, uno degli spettacoli di riferimento del grande teatro newyorkese. Sul podio James Levine conduce una lettura serratissima, di incalzante intensità drammatica; Eva Marton si confronta da par suo con la vocalità vertiginosa della protagonista; Leona Mitchell dà vita a una Liù delicata e trepidante. Domingo coglie un memorabile trionfo, mandando il pubblico in delirio con un'interpretazione indimenticabile di "Nessun dorma".

Rigoletto

Un Rigoletto indimenticabile, quello che va in scena al Metropolitan nel novembre 1977. Nel ruolo del titolo spicca uno dei protagonisti di quegli anni al teatro di New York: Cornell MacNeil, capace di donare al personaggio del buffone una tinta umanissima, ma senza trascurarne il lato malvagio. Placido Domingo è un Duca strepitoso, per mezzi vocali e travolgente carica vitale; Ileana Cotrubas una Gilda perfetta, fragile e implorante. Di alto livello anche il resto del cast, nel quale spiccano il possente Monterone di John Cheek e l'avvenente Maddalena di Isola Jones. La direzione di James Levine si distingue per un impressionante, serratissimo ritmo drammatico.

Giuseppe Verdi - La forza del destino

Donna Leonora, figlia del Marchese di Calatrava, si prepara a fuggire segretamente con il suo amante Don Alvaro (figlio del Viceré del Messico e di una principessa Inca). Il marchese entra inaspettatamente. Alvaro esita ad alzare l'arma contro il padre della sua amante e getta la pistola. Mentre cade, la pistola spara e il marchese viene ferito a morte. Mentre muore, maledice la figlia. Don Carlo di Vargas, fratello di Leonora, decide di vendicare la morte della sorella e del suo fidanzato. Nel tumulto dell'inseguimento, Leonora e Alvaro si perdono... Registrazione dal vivo effettuata il 2 e 5 febbraio 2011 al Teatro Regio di Parma. Il libretto di Francesco Piave è basato su un'opera teatrale di Ángel Saavedra (1791 - 1865), Duca di Rivas, “Don Álvaro o la Fuerza del sino” (1835). La trama di questo dramma romantico si basa interamente su coincidenze, casualità e incontri inaspettati. In una parola, sul destino.
