Anti-XRL Campaign - Media Perspective

In late 2009, over twenty Hong Kong civic groups united as the "Anti-High-Speed Rail, Stop Funding" coalition, aiming to halt Legislative Council approval of the HKD 66.9 billion Express Rail Link amid deep social rifts. The "Post-80s Anti-High-Speed Rail Youth" group drew thousands of young people with their slogan “Defend Our Homeland, Protest with Joy,” leading to three funding suspensions that surprised the public. The evangelical movement is convinced that they will be saved when Jesus appears in the state of Israel on horseback and, with a sword raised to heaven, kills the infidels so that the blood reaches the horses’ bridles. Natural fires, corona, wars and crises are evidence that the time is nigh. But for the prophecies to be realized, the state of Israel has to grow stronger, so they provide huge financial support and are so far inside the White House that they help influence US foreign policy.

Franco Mella

Franco Mella is a devoted figure whose life bridges Catholicism and Communism. He has journeyed through Asia, lived simply, and fought for social justice, notably within Hong Kong's protest history as depicted in "Ordinary Heroes" (1999). Mella's path weaves through religious and revolutionary movements, from church beginnings to Communist activism and the Handover, always driven by his missionary spirit and communist ideals. For four decades, he has steadfastly championed the oppressed, undeterred by shifting politics, expressing solidarity through music and protest, and remaining a symbol of wisdom and resilience for the people of Hong Kong.

Her Anti-WTO

The 2005 World Trade Conference in Hong Kong was the starting point of the "direct action" that emerged from the Hong Kong protest movement. It was also the first time the Hong Kong police used a large number of tear-gas and beanbag rounds on the street after the 1967 riots. Outside the conference, there were many Hong Kong protestors. Why and how did they get involved in this movement centered on Korean farmers?

Seven activists from Hong Kong joint the global fight against the G8 Summit in Hokkaido Japan 2008. Given the fact that global warming, labor and energy issues were discussed and covered by mainstream media, they tried to get their voice heard to the leaders at the Windsor Hotel in Toyako (The Toya Lake), but they experienced hospitality of Japanese police brutality from the city rallies to the protest in the mountains.

The COVID-19 exploded in China in early 2020. Thousands of people from the mainland rushed to Hong Kong that made the people panic. The supply of the face masks cannot meet the demand. Some non-governmental organizations distributed face masks to the elderly in early February that attracted lots of people to queue up.

It disproves the notion of a passive Hong Kong in a chronicle of a generation poised for massive social change.
