PROGRESS Chapter 89: 26th May 1988

Much like the infamous match between Bret Hart and Tom Magee, a piece of PROGRESS history has recently been uncovered. The former Progress announcer, Jimmy Barnett, has been sharing his memories of a show from May 26th, 1988. Last year he was kind enough to offer his recollections of a very early PROGRESS from way back in May of 1978 (PROGRESS even found the footage in their vault), and it's a rare treat to get details of another historical show from a man on the inside.

Men

Cleo lives in Marseilles and works as a waitress in a waterfront dive. A stranger entices her into coming to Paris to take dancing lessons, but instead she is taken to a baron, who betrays her. In spite of this inauspicious start, Cleo becomes a successful and renowned actress, but her feelings about men have never recovered. She loathes them and uses them only for the money they offer her, which she then hands over to a penniless girl.

The Reconciliation

Often interspliced and edited to a near distracting degree, the live performances are riveting, with Polly Jean displaying a venomous allure in her Oz-red high heels and short-skirted dresses.

Johnny One-Eye

Johnny One-Eye was adapted from one of Damon Runyon's lesser-known stories. Martin Martin and Dane Cory were former partners in crime who have long since split up. When a new district attorney puts the heat on, Cory, anxious to save his own hide, accuses Martin of an unsolved murder. Holed up in abandoned house, Martin is befriended by a little girl and her dog. It so happens that the girl is the daughter of the crusading DA, and thereby hangs the rest of this tale.

The Fantastic Water Babes

Gil (Gillian Chung) is a girl who tries to take her own life after being dumped by her boyfriend for another girl, Brenda (Chrissie Chow). Gil gets rescued by a water deity, and believes she has received special powers. Even though she doesn't even know how to swim she enters the Fantastic Water Babes swimming competition, in an vengeful effort to compete against her romantic rival and her friends, and to get back her boyfriend. To master swimming she kidnaps swimming champion Kwok Chi Yuan (Alex Fong Lik Sun) to the island of Cheung Chau, to make him teach her and her friends how to swim.
