Ann Dexter, daughter of an itinerant Haiti waterfront character, Carl Dexter, brings a golden idol, which her father her stolen at a voodoo ceremony, to Bill Buchanan, who is known along the waterfront as a man eternally on a treasure hunt. He agrees to let Ann accompany him in search of the treasure after a native he befriended gives him directions and certain voodoo secret charms. They follow an underwater passage to an island where they find a Pagan tribe. They learn that the golden idol is a burial symbol representing the dead and that hundreds of idols are at the bottom of the sacred burial lake.

Un uomo, una donna e un bambino

Siamo a Los Angeles, in casa di una coppia, Bob e Sheila Beckwith, felicemente sposata, con due figlie: Jessica di tredici anni, e Paula di nove. Bob insegna lettere in un college e Sheila è redattrice letteraria di una casa editrice. Tuttavia anni addietro Bob ha avuto, durante un corso di conferenze in Francia, una relazione con una dottoressa, Nicole Guerin. E' nato un figlio, Jean-Claude, che Bob non ha mai visto, come, in dieci anni, non ha più rivisto Nicole. Giunge a Los Angeles la notizia che Nicole ha perso la vita in un incidente stradale e Jean-Claude è rimasto solo. Bob confida a Sheila quell'unico tradimento della sua vita, scatenando nella moglie sentimenti contrastanti di turbamento, di rabbia, di gelosia, di dubbio, di curiosità, di insicurezza. Alla proposta di Bob di andare in Francia, Sheila reagisce negativamente, e alla fine, decidono di far venire Jean-Claude a Los Angeles per due settimane.

La felicità della giornata e l’euforia per la velocità delle automobili lasciano però presto il posto allo sconforto: Frank, uno di loro, rimane vittima di un incidente e ha bisogno di un trapianto di fegato. L’unico donatore compatibile sembra essere il fratello maggiore, in prigione per un furto commesso anni prima. La banda si adopererà per escogitare una soluzione.

Why Not?

The film depicts carnivalesque atmosphere summed up by the cry "Ei ja nai ka" ("Why not?") in Japan in 1867 and 1868 in the days leading to the Meiji Restoration. It examines the effects of the political and social upheaval of the time, and culminates in a revelrous march on the Tokyo Imperial Palace, which turns into a massacre. Characteristically, Imamura focuses not on the leaders of the country, but on characters in the lower classes and on the fringes of society.
