Durante la guerra di secessione cinque nordisti evadono in aerostato e approdano in un'isola dove s'imbattono nel capitano Nemo e in un'eruzione vulcanica.

Il capitano Nemo e la città sommersa

Dal naufragio di un veliero, dovuto a una furiosa tempesta, si salvano tutti tranne sei passeggeri. Questi, mentre s'inabissano, vengono strappati alla morte dall'intervento del Capitano Nemo che li accoglie sul sommergibile "Nautilus", nella sua città sottomarina. I sei, tra cui il senatore Frazer, cercano di tornare in superficie. Si impossessano di un batiscafo ma questo esplode. Gli unici due superstiti vengono allora raccolti dall'equipaggio di una nave.
