Il film è un documentario con una trama costruita per mostrare tutti gli aspetti di questa marcia che annualmente compiono gli imperatori. Viste poetiche di tramonti sul ghiaccio si affiancano spesso a momenti piuttosto drammatici e malinconici in cui ci viene mostrato, ad esempio, come un uovo viene danneggiato dal ghiaccio o ancora come alcuni piccoli di pinguino muoiano divorati dai predatori o a causa del freddo.

Alcuni piccoli muoiono dal freddo ed il motivo è perché uno dei pinguini ha sbagliato qualche passo della loro danza facendo così cadere l'uovo nel ghiaccio e facendolo congelare... e allora la madre va a rubare il figlio ad un altro pinguino
