As amedical student in Paris, he had been appalled by the living conditions of the Algerian immigrants and gave over the rest of his brief life to analysing the alienation of the black man, of colonised people and man in general. The forcefulness of his writing - as in Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth - and the pertinence of his reasoning still resonate strongly into today's world.

Salvatores aveva cavato nel 1982 uno spettacolo musicale che girò per mezz'Italia (200 000 spettatori). Nel trasferirla sullo schermo, con più di una modifica, ha calato in un'atmosfera “africana” più che metropolitana (com'era sul palcoscenico) il mondo notturno, irrazionale e un po' vampiresco di Oberon (Bucci), re degli Elfi, e di Titania (Nannini), regina degli Spiriti, separandolo nettamente dal mondo diurno, razionale e un po' isterico nel quale agiscono Teseo (Lionello), Ippolita (Blanc) e i quattro ragazzi innamorati.
