Naval recruit Elmer is seemingly unable to discharge any of his duties without making life miserable for his irascible commanding officer, who winds up getting doused with paint, splattered with muck, and repeatedly tossed into the water due to Elmer's ineptitude. To make matters worse, Elmer takes a shine to the CO's girlfriend, which prompts her jealous boyfriend into several wrathful chases after Elmer. He eventually has Elmer locked in the brig -- but his girlfriend is in there too, so she can be together with her beloved Elmer.

The masquerader [La mascherata]

Chaplin arriva agli studi Keystone, e subito il regista lo manda in camerino. Chaplin ne esce truccato da Charlot, e il regista gli spiega che la scena che si appresta a girare prevede che il vagabondo salvi un bambino che sta per essere pugnalato da un cattivo (interpretato da Jess Dandy). Ma Chaplin prima si attarda con alcune fan accorse sul set, e poi rovina la scena con la sua irruenza. Il regista decide quindi di sostituirlo con Chester Conklin, ma Chaplin per ripicca rovina nuovamente la scena. Il regista, furioso, lo insegue e quindi lo licenzia. Poco dopo, agli studi compare un'affascinante diva, calorosamente ricevuta dal regista che le promette una parte e fa sgomberare il camerino degli attori per farglielo usare. Ella si rivela però essere Chaplin travestito, che dopo aver ripreso le sembianze di Charlot, viene inseguito dal regista e dagli attori e da loro gettato in un pozzo.

Topolino, Paperino e Pluto stanno facendo un'escursione in montagna. Paperino si mette a raccogliere stelle alpine, ma viene infastidito da una capretta di montagna. Topolino, invece, scopre un nido di aquila e comincia a prenderne le uova, ma viene attaccato dall'aquila madre. Per difendersi le tira addosso le uova, che si schiudono. Una di esse cade vicino a Pluto, e il cane, inseguendo l'aquilotto che ne esce, finisce congelato in un mucchio di neve. Bolivar gli fa bere del vino per riscaldarlo, ma Pluto ne resta ubriaco e comincia a infastidire il cagnolone. Nel frattempo Paperino se la deve vedere anche con il padre della capretta, ma riesce a batterlo. Poi corre a salvare Topolino, ancora attaccato dall'aquila, ma si attira addosso la furia dell'uccello. Infine i due atterrano nella cuccia di Bolivar, e vedono Pluto e il cagnolone, entrambi ubriachi, che ululano allegramente.

Dopo che Jerry ha rotto un vaso in testa a Tom, Mammy Due Scarpe dà a quest'ultimo la colpa e lo butta fuori di casa. Per un po' Jerry si diverte in assenza di Tom, ma presto comincia a sentirsi solo. Decide quindi di riabilitare il gatto proponendogli un piano. Tom accetta, e Jerry, rientrato in casa, inizia subito ad impaurire Mammy finché quest'ultima non chiama in aiuto Tom. I due inscenano così un lungo inseguimento dove fingono di combattere tra loro. Alla fine Tom mette sotto il tappeto un pomodoro facendo credere a Mammy che si tratti di Jerry, così la donna lo colpisce con la scopa. Tom finge di piangere la caduta del nemico, e Mammy gli dà in premio una torta. Quando Jerry si presenta per ottenere la sua parte, però, Tom lo manda via. Allora Jerry si vendica tirando un calcio a Tom e facendolo cadere di muso nella torta.
