Dahfer Youssef Montreux Jazz.Festival (2015)

Dhafer Youssef è diventato uno dei musicisti tunisini più conosciuti e apprezzati al mondo. Compositore, cantante e suonatore di oud, Youssef proprio grazie a questo strumento, dal quale riesce a trarre composizioni complesse improntate sulla tradizione araba, rappresenta un’unicità nella scena musicale contemporanea. Le radici della sua musica affondano nella tradizione Sufi e nella musica mistica, ma il musicista tunisino è sempre stato aperto alla musica di altre culture e al jazz. Youssef ha collaborato, tra gli altri, con Uri Caine, Tigran Hamasyan, Jon Hassell, Markus Stockhausen, Nguyên Lê, Omar Sosa, Hüsnü Senlendirici, il chitarrista norvegese Eivind Aarset e il trombettista Paolo Fresu. Lirismo arabo, potenza ritmica, improvvisazione contaminata da influenze multiculturali e jazzistiche sono le caratteristiche che distinguono le sue opere. Birds Requiem, il suo ultimo album, costruito come una colonna sonora cinematografica, è un’opera molto personale.

Last Days of Summer

They have partied through their 20s. Now, Tamara, Ponek and Sierzput have to figure out what to do with their lives. Tamara is a feminist, but also a hopeless romantic. Sierzput has just won his girlfriend back, but is struggling to hold on to her. And out of sheer boredom, Ponek has broken her own rule number one and has started sleeping with her friends. Three lives, intertwined in a fog of cigarette smoke and canned beer during a long summer in concrete-grey Warsaw, where the desire to party to the early hours is never far away. The Danish director Karl Forchhammer’s film is an entertaining and existential tale with raw edges.

The Hidden Half

An official is sent from his home in Tehran to hear the final appeal of a woman sentenced to death, a political prisoner. The official's wife of nearly 20 years, Fereshteh Samimi, writes him a letter to read when he reaches the hotel - the story of her student days during the revolution of 1978. We see the story in flashbacks as he reads: she leaves her province on scholarship, joins a Communist youth group, avoids arrest, and comes under the sway of a suave older man, Roozbeh Javid, a literary-magazine editor. As she tells her husband about the hidden half of her life, Fereshteh asks that he listen to the woman facing execution, a woman and therefore one of Iran's hidden half.

This recording was made in a continuous single live-in-the-studio pass in collaboration with NPG drummer Michael Bland and bassist Sonny T. Prince originally intended to give this live CD away free with 1,000 copies of Guitar Player magazine in 1994, but he was reportedly barred by Warner Bros. from doing so. A video recording of the performance was released in Europe (on VHS and Laserdisc) with small edits throughout the performance and "Dolphin" replaced by the audio track from the official video of the song from The Gold Experience.
