A Memphis, nel 1953, nel corso di una festa presso la scuola dove studia, si esibisce davanti al pubblico per amore della fidanzata Polly. Subito dopo il giovane Elvis prende contatto con Sam Philips, proprietario dell'etichetta discografica 'Sound Record' e gli chiede di incidere un disco da regalare a sua madre. Da lì inizia la travolgente carriera del re del rock che si concluderà con la morte, nell'agosto del 1977.

Le notti di Cabiria

Piccola battona romana è derubata e quasi ammazzata da un rispettabile impiegato cui ha affidato tutti i suoi risparmi nella speranza di farsi sposare e rifarsi una vita. Nonostante la struttura rapsodica, l'arco narrativo è rigoroso e armonico, paragonabile a una sinfonia in cui i diversi tempi s'allacciano per convergere alla definizione della protagonista e del suo destino. Episodi memorabili: la villa di Nazzari, il pellegrinaggio al santuario del Divino Amore, l'ipnotizzatore nel cinema di periferia. Oscar per il miglior film straniero. 6 Nastri d'argento: produttore (De Laurentiis), regia, Masina, Marzi, musiche (N. Rota), scene (M. Chiari, M. Garbuglia). Fornì la base alla commedia musicale Sweet Charity e al film (1969) omonimo di Bob Fosse con Shirley MacLaine. Premio a Cannes per la Masina.

Ginger e Fred

Amelia Bonetti e Pippo Botticella in arte Ginger e Fred sono due attempati ballerini di tip-tap, romantici e un po' squinternati, interpretati da Giulietta Masina e Marcello Mastroianni. Ginger e Fred vengono coinvolti da una tv privata in una sorta di "operazione nostalgia", ma si capisce subito che al centro della scena stanno in realtà la figura del presentatore e la pubblicità. Quando i due vengono chiamati sul palco si verifica un blackout che interrompe il loro numero. Fred-Mastroianni confabulando con Ginger-Masina sull'insensatezza della loro presenza al programma, la convince ad andarsene dal palco insieme a lui prima della ripresa del programma. Mentre in uscita, Pippo sta rivolgendo un gestaccio ai "teledipendenti", la luce torna e i due riprendono tristemente il loro numero di ballo, terminandolo con grande affanno e ricevendo un applauso pietoso.
