Dumbo

Dotato di orecchie spropositate, l'elefantino Dumbo fa parte di un circo ambulante dove, a causa della sua diversità, è umiliato e offeso da tutti, gli altri elefanti compresi. Nel difenderlo da un'aggressione, la sua amorevole madre suscita un grande scompiglio. Viene imprigionata come matta e separata dal figlio. Disperato, Dumbo trova conforto nel topolino Timothy che gli insegna a usare le grandi orecchie per volare. Diventa una star.

Il sogno di Red

In una città deserta durante una notte di pioggia. In un angolo di un negozio da ciclista chiamato "Eben's Bikes", un monociclo rosso attende di essere comprato. Red sogna di essere guidato da Lumpy il pagliaccio e di entrare nella pista del circo al suono della fanfara. Invece degli attesi applausi scroscianti che si aspetta, si ode però solo il suono di pochi battimani da parte degli spettatori invisibili. Lumpy esegue il suo numero da giocoliere con le palline mentre pedala sul monociclo, e quando una delle tre palline cade, Red gliela rilancia con i pedali. Quando la pallina verde cade e rotola attraverso la pista, è Red a raccoglierla e a farla rimbalzare sul pedale, mentre Lumpy continua il suo numero con le due palline rimaste. Quando Lumpy finalmente capisce cosa sta accadendo, guarda in basso, scopre di stare pedalando sul vuoto e cade.

Disoccupato, inseguito da un poliziotto, Charlot trova rifugio e lavoro in un circo come clown (involontario) e s'innamora della cavallerizza. Pur nella ricchezza delle invenzioni comiche (Charlot sulla corda, assalito dalle scimmie; il baraccone degli specchi, ecc.), appare un riepilogo di motivi già sfruttati, ma approfondisce con tristezza struggente la dimensione sentimentale del suo personaggio di reietto. ("Un debole omino calpestato/ da Los Angeles a qui/ recita attraverso gli oceani..." V. Majakovskij.) Quando, però, il film che lo stesso autore non teneva tra i suoi più riusciti ritornò in circolazione negli anni '60, in una nuova edizione musicata dallo stesso Chaplin, esso incantò un'altra generazione di spettatori. Non a caso Federico Fellini lo adorava.
