The Abduction from the Seraglio

Without question, this is an incredibly bizarre production. The revised storyline makes little sense, and there is a surprising amount of violence and sexual innuendo. However, the singers are superb, both vocally and in regard to their stage presence and acting, the orchestra plays beautifully, the chorus is wonderful, and the set is as clever as it is strange. It's definitely not for purists, or for someone new to this particular opera. But for someone who's seen Die Entfuhrung before, and is familiar enough with the original story to not miss it, watching Belmonte, Constanze, Blonde, Pedrillo, and Osmin embark on an entirely new adventure -- and push the boundaries of good taste -- is rather enjoyable.

Jethro Tull: Living With The Past

A veritable feast awaits fans of Ian Anderson's Jethro Tull on this elaborate DVD package, which boasts extensive concert footage and a load of extras. The focal point is nearly two hours of performances, filmed in late 2001 (primarily in London, with additional material from several other locations) and featuring material from the band's entire lengthy career, including such staples as "Aqualung" and "Bouree." The current Tull incarnation (featuring, as always, Anderson on vocals, flute, and sundry other instruments) takes center stage; there are also a couple of numbers with a string quartet, and even a small-club reunion of the lineup that made the group's very first album back in 1968. Interviews with band members, testimonials from rabid fans, photos, and even an option for viewing a Tull performance from three different audience points of view are among the generous helping of extra features.

At the cemetery, in an abandoned factory, in an asylum, in a landfill, in places full of sorrow, our heroes search for love and togetherness. By combining documentary material, animation and acting interpretation of the thoughts of our heroes, we get to know lives between disappointment and hope, quite similar to ours.

The masquerader [La mascherata]

Chaplin arriva agli studi Keystone, e subito il regista lo manda in camerino. Chaplin ne esce truccato da Charlot, e il regista gli spiega che la scena che si appresta a girare prevede che il vagabondo salvi un bambino che sta per essere pugnalato da un cattivo (interpretato da Jess Dandy). Ma Chaplin prima si attarda con alcune fan accorse sul set, e poi rovina la scena con la sua irruenza. Il regista decide quindi di sostituirlo con Chester Conklin, ma Chaplin per ripicca rovina nuovamente la scena. Il regista, furioso, lo insegue e quindi lo licenzia. Poco dopo, agli studi compare un'affascinante diva, calorosamente ricevuta dal regista che le promette una parte e fa sgomberare il camerino degli attori per farglielo usare. Ella si rivela però essere Chaplin travestito, che dopo aver ripreso le sembianze di Charlot, viene inseguito dal regista e dagli attori e da loro gettato in un pozzo.

L'uomo meccanico, con Paperino

Paperino visita il "Museo delle Meraviglie Moderne", che mette in mostra diversi apparecchi elettronici e invenzioni futuristiche. Nel museo, Paperino incontra e si scontra con molte strane e capricciose macchine, che sembrano avercela tutte con lui. Una gag ricorrente in tutto il film vede il maggiordomo robot apparire per portare via il cappello a Paperino, con le parole "Il suo cappello, signore". Dopo aver incontrato un robot autostoppista, una macchina di impacchettamento e una carrozzina completamente automatizzata, il corto finisce quando Paperino tenta di truffare una poltrona da barbiere robot e finisce per ottenere un taglio di capelli sul suo posteriore e un becco lucido come una scarpa.

La lepre e la tartaruga

La tartaruga e la lepre è un cortometraggio animato uscito il 5 gennaio 1935 dalla United Artists, prodotto da Walt Disney e diretto da Wilfred Jackson. Basato sull'omonima favola di Esopo, La tartaruga e la lepre vinse l'Oscar nel 1934 per il miglior cortometraggio: cartoni animati. Si ritiene che questo cartone animato abbia avuto delle influenze per l'evoluzione di Bugs Bunny.

Re Mida

Re Mida riceve la visita di un elfo; l'elfo trasforma il suo gatto in oro, poi batte le mani e torna indietro. Midas chiede il tocco d'oro, ma l'elfo lo avverte che sarebbe una maledizione per lui. Mida insiste. All'inizio balla con gioia, ma scopre gli inconvenienti quando si siede a cena. Temendo la morte per fame, convoca l'elfo e accetta di rinunciare a tutto ciò che possiede per far revocare la maledizione.

Paperino e nipoti sono il personale di una stazione dei pompieri. Qui, Quo e Qua, infastiditi dal russare di Paperino, suonano l'allarme antincendio. Ben presto, l'incompetenza di Paperino fa sì che a prendere davvero fuoco sia la stazione stessa. Dopo una serie di guai, Paperino prova a spegnere il fuoco con la pompa dell'acqua, senza accorgersi di averla collegata al serbatoio di benzina del camion. Così la stazione, il camion e anche il cappello di Paperino si disintegrano.
