These tragedies seem to occur more frequently, with politicians seemingly inactive. This changed on Valentine’s Day 2018, when a shooting at MSD High School in Parkland, Florida, killed 14 students and three faculty members. In response, young people organised the largest gun violence protests since the Vietnam War, demanding stricter gun laws and a ban on AR-15 rifles. Director Sebastian Bellwinkel documented this movement. While mass shootings are a significant issue, they account for only 1% of the 30,000 gun-related deaths annually. Some states have altered gun laws due to the protests, but the conservative Trump administration’s stance on making firearms harder to access remains unclear.

America oggi

Da 9 racconti (e dalla poesia Lemonade: l'episodio con Jack Lemmon) di Raymond Carver. Nella sua mescolanza di generi e di toni questo grande capitolo della saga americana di Altman è una commedia umana dove si può trovare di tutto, come nella vita. Come Carver – di cui sviluppa i racconti, modificandoli e allacciandoli l'uno all'altro – il regista non interviene a commentare i fatti: si limita a raccontarli con lucidità, dolente partecipazione e una libertà che lascia allo spettatore la possibilità del giudizio. Si apre con un minaccioso volo di elicotteri e si chiude con una scossa di terremoto a Los Angeles, dove si svolgono le storie (ambientate da Carver a Seattle o Portland). C'è chi ha trovato quest'affresco troppo amaro, impietoso, disperato. Altman non ha bisogno di alzare la voce per fare l'apocalittico. America oggi? Ma qui si parla anche di noi. Leone d'oro 1993, ex aequo con Tre colori-Film Blu di Kieslowski, e una Coppa Volpi straordinaria al complesso degli interpreti.

Manhattan

Episodi sentimentali nella vita sessuale di uno scrittore televisivo di New York la cui ultima moglie (Streep) l'ha abbandonato per una donna. In questo poema d'amore per una Manhattan interiorizzata e sognata, calata nel sublime bianconero di Gordon Willis o accarezzata dalle canzoni di George Gershwin, più che la vicenda contano i personaggi e il tono con cui sono raccontati. Dramma in cadenze leggere di commedia: la summa di Allen di cui è per molti critici e spettatori il film preferito, quello che resterà. Agli Oscar, infatti, non fu nemmeno nominato. 1° film di Allen in bianconero e anamorfico. L'autore non ne era soddisfatto: troppo statico. 1° film con Susan E. Morse al montaggio.

Accidenti, che ospitalità!

Le famiglie McKay e Canfield sono afflitte da un'eterna faida. I due capi famiglia si scontrano a duello e si uccidono a vicenda lasciando l'amaro compito di essere vendicati alla loro prole. Il giovane McKay tuttavia, non viene allevato nell'odio ma dato in affidamento ad una famiglia di New York. L'uomo crescerà all'oscuro della faida tra la sua famiglia e i Canfield sino all'età di 21 anni quando erediterà tutti i possedimenti dei McKay e dovrà quindi recarsi al suo paese natale per prendere possesso delle proprietà ereditate. Durante il viaggio in treno stringe amicizia con una giovane donna che si rivelerà essere figlia di Joseph Canfield, attuale capofamiglia dei Canfield che, quando saprà dell'arrivo del McKay darà il via a una caccia per tutto il paese e il giovane sarà vittima dei loro continui attentati. Solo l'amore tra i due porterà equilibrio e pace tra le due famiglie.
