Muslim Crimean Tatars have been oppressed for a long time. They were deported under Stalin, allowed to return under Gorbachev, and since the occupation of Crimea in 2014 under Putin, they are being persecuted again. "Return" is a portrait of Mumine and Maye, two strong women struggling with the consequences of oppression. La pellicola ha inizio nell'Italia post-risorgimentale (il riferimento alla tassa sul macinato ed all'uso dei contagiri, indica gli anni tra il 1869 ed il 1880, quando l'imposta fu in vigore) ed è ambientato nei pressi del delta ferrarese del Po. Per motivi tecnici il film fu girato nel mantovano e non nel ferrarese, salvo alcune riprese effettuate nei pressi di Occhiobello (Rovigo)[1]. L'austerità ed il lavoro quotidiano di due famiglie locali, Scacerni e Verginesi, vengono interrotte in un giorno speciale: il fidanzamento dei rispettivi figli, Berta ed Orbino. La gioia del brindisi tra le famiglie è però guastata dall'arrivo dei finanzieri, giunti a verificare che gli Scacerni non abbiano di nuovo manomesso i contatori del loro mulino per non pagare il balzello: in tal caso, ci sarebbero l'arresto e la confisca.
