Ghost Story: The House Where Butterflies Live

Yoshinari Bessho, the feudal lord of Tanba Province, is a collector of butterflies and has his concubines tattooed with butterflies as well. One day while hunting, Yoshinari sees Gennosuke Akizuki's beautiful wife, Okoto. He kidnaps her, tattoos a butterfly on her shoulder and takes her for his own. Feeling shame for what has happened, Okoto throws herself into a well and commits suicide. She then returns as a ruthless ghost that seeks revenge against Yoshinari and his retainers. Whenever the ghost appears, mysterious butterflies always fly around her...

Sembra che fosse proprio Bonnard, attore e regista, a ispirare una delle più famose macchiette di Ettore Petrolini (“Ogni cuor si accende e arde, perché ci ho gli occhioni belli, le basette a la Bonnard...”). Toccava a lui di dirigere questo film, e a Sordi di interpretarlo, bravissimo nel far sentire l'amaro sotto il fatuo. Con qualche sforzo in più questa commedia che diverte e tira al patetico senza mezze misure poteva essere un'efficace satira di costume degli anni '20. Petroliniano a metà. Nastro d'argento 1961 per i costumi (Maria De Matteis).

David McVicar's spellbinding production of LE NOZZE DI FIGARO is set in 1830s post-revolution France, where the inexorable unravelling of an old order has produced acute feelings of loss. In the relationship between Finley's suave, dashingly self-absorbed Count and Röschmann's passionately dignified Countess, which lies at the tragic heart of the opera, the sexy ease between a feisty Figaro (Erwin Schrott) and a sassy Susanna (Miah Persson) is starkly absent, the tenacious spark between Marcellina (Graciela Araya) and Bartolo (Jonathan Veira) suggesting what might be rekindled. The production is superbly complemented by the beauty of Paule Constable's lighting and Tanya McCallin's evocative sets. Antonio Pappano conducts (and accompanies the recitatives) with invigorating wit and emotional depth.
