Om Pius is a native Papuan from the Keerom mountains who has been living and residing with communities of various ethnicities in the coastal area of Sentani, Jayapura, since the post-Act of Free Choice in the 70s. For more than 30 years, he has been a ‘mountain man’ living with a coastal culture. The history of population displacement, violence in Papua, natural wealth, longing for the homeland, romantic past, war, hopes, and dreams, are the life stories of Om Pius which he manifests through the lottery.

Il documentario, filmato tra il 21 ottobre e il 30 novembre 2003, racconta la rappresentazione di Fotofinish non come opera unica e continuativa, ma come l’evolversi nel tempo degli umori e del movimento degli attori che, replica dopo replica, hanno maturato coscienza dello spazio e sono arrivati alla gioia della messa in scena. Partendo dai campi lunghi, girati durante i primi giorni, ci si è spinti sempre più vicini all’evento fino a salire con la telecamera sul palco. Inseguendo il ritmo spasmodico della dinamica performativa, impegnata a manifestarsi nella finzione, il contesto spaziale diventa realtà. La voce recitante, registrata durante una delle ultime repliche, è l’illusione percettiva che conduce l’opera verso un’unitarietà fatta di suoni fuori sincrono e salti prospettici. Il corpo del performer è in mutamento e viene raffigurato nei primi giorni, quando era tondo e sinuoso, e negli ultimi, quando è scarnito e scorticato.
