Un gruppo di scienziati giapponesi, guidati da Kusumi, si trova da tempo su di un isolotto del Pacifico per effettuare, per conto dell'Onu, un esperimento di ibernazione e verificare pertanto se è possibile per l'uomo mutare le condizioni climatiche nel mondo e rendere così fertili le regioni deserte. Ai ricercatori si aggrega un giornalista, Goro, il quale, benché malvisto all'inizio, riesce poi ad inserirsi nel gruppo. Questi un giorno, durante una passeggiata sulla riva del mare, vede una ragazza, che scompare improvvisamente alla sua vista, e non avendo altre prove la notizia non è creduta dai compagni. Intanto si dà il via all'esperimento, che fallisce per alcune interferenze che impediscono il contatto decisivo. Questi impedimenti sono causati dalle grida di richiamo del figlio di Godzilla, un mostro preistorico racchiuso nel suo uovo che alcune mantidi giganti cercano di rompere.
