The film follows her work, the main emphasis being “the accompaniment of communities at risk”. Despite being threatened, shot in the leg and deported later that year, she is determined to go back.

Sceglie per il “Memento” del coro il tredicesimo capitolo della prima lettera di Paolo ai Corinti. 1° film della trilogia sui colori della bandiera francese (blu = libertà): coincide interamente con la protagonista (Kieslowski: “Voglio filmare la tua intimità”) che, tolta una breve scena, è sempre presente sullo schermo. Gli altri personaggi sono funzioni narrative più che figure con vita propria.

Dopo aver passato un lungo periodo in un istituto per malattie mentali a seguito della morte della madre, le due sorelle Bae Soo-yeon e Bae Soo-mi, fanno ritorno a casa, dove ad attenderle, oltre al padre, c'è anche la sua nuova compagna, la giovane Eun-Joo. Nonostante le apparenti buone intenzioni iniziali della donna nei confronti delle ragazze, il clima fra loro e la matrigna è tesissimo. Dopo Michael Moore anche Van Sant riflette sulla strage compiuta da due studenti nei confronti di compagni e professori nel liceo di Columbine negli Usa. Lo fa con un film di breve durata in cui si affida a una macchina da presa che pedina alcuni dei protagonisti che diverranno vittime o assassini quasi fosse una candid camera. Ne esce un quadro di desolante vuoto esistenziale, un tunnel che non ha una luce sul fondo. Non c'è più neppure la tragedia. La morte per strage si tinge di banale quotidianità.
