After disappearing from a small Polish town, a mother discovers her 4-year old daughter, Ola, has been abducted by the Russian Mafia. In pursuit of her daughter, she is stopped for speeding by a police officer, Robert Goc. His intervention results in the escape of the kidnappers across the Eastern border. Nel primo episodio ("In Vespa") Nanni Moretti vaga per una Roma estiva e semideserta, va al cinema, raggiunge il Lido di Ostia fino al luogo in cui è stato ucciso Pasolini. Nel secondo ("Isole") partiamo da Lipari per arrivare a Filicudi in compagnia di Gerardo, teledipendente inconfessato. L'episodio finale ("Medici") segue invece l'odissea di Moretti a cui viene diagosticato un tumore al sistema linfatico. Dei tre episodi il migliore è il primo, tutto carrellate e riprese dal basso in mezzo ai palazzi romani. Ma funziona bene anche il terzo, così asciutto e privo di retorica, per di più su una materia autobiografica in cui sarebbe stato facile perdere la misura.

Il potere temporale dei papi sta per terminare: fra tre anni, a Roma, entreranno i bersaglieri da Porta Pia. Un gruppo di giovani complotta contro il papa. Donna Flaminia, madre di Cesare, uno dei rivoluzionari, pur di salvare il figlio, rivela a monsignor Colombo, giudice del tribunale, che il ragazzo è suo figlio. Il prelato riesce a far liberare il figlio naturale e a nasconderlo. Ma il giovane morirà ugualmente, ucciso da un uomo che lo crede l'amante della moglie. Monsignor Colombo finirà in galera.

Roughly chronological, from 3/96 to 11/96, with a coda in spring of 1997: inside compounds of Aum Shinrikyo, a Buddhist sect led by Shoko Asahara. (Members confessed to a murderous sarin attack in the Tokyo subway in 1995.) We see what they eat, where they sleep, and how they respond to media scrutiny, on-going trials, the shrinking of their fortunes, and the criticism of society. Central focus is placed on Hiroshi Araki, a young man who finds himself elevated to chief spokesman for Aum after its leaders are arrested. Araki faces extreme hostility from the Japanese public, who find it hard to believe that most followers of the cult had no idea of the attacks and even harder to understand why these followers remain devoted to the religion, if not the violence.
