Zhou Yu's Train

Zhou Yu, a ceramic artisan in China's rural Northwest, has a deep rapport with Chen Qing, a shy sensitive poet. Taking a long train ride every weekend just to make mad passionate love with him, her longing seems insatiable. Until one day, she meets the hedonistic vet Zhang Qiang and begins a torrid affair, which takes her to another train station, and another level of lust. Driven by the locomotive of love and desire, she hustles through a dark tunnel of no return.

Breaking the Silence

Gong Li stars in this low-key drama about a single mother who will do anything to provide for her son. Sun Liying (Li) struggles to care for her hearing-impaired child Zheng Da (Gao Xin) after her taxi driver husband divorces her. After Zheng Da gets his hearing aid smashed in a fight with classmates, Sun Liying sets out to raise 5,000 yuan (a small fortune) to buy him a replacement. A friend helps her set up an unauthorized bookstall, which soon gets raided by the police. Later she splits her time delivering newspapers and cleaning house for a rich businessman. This film was screened at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival.

Impossible

Memeda, an alien from outer space happens to meet a depressed man who just lost his daughter in a car accident. After many challenges and conflicts, the two become good partners in a hilarious adventure.

The Human Comedy

Penniless and desperate for money, a married couple and a fuerdai cook up a fake kidnap for ransom scheme among themselves. Married couple Pu Tong and Mi La are as ordinary as can be. When their employers default on their compensation, they are unable to pay rent. Yang Xiao Wei is a fuerdai "second-generation rich" who is unloved by his own father. Xiao Wei owes Ba Ye a substantial sum of money that he has no way of paying off.

Beijing, the present day. Tang Weiwei (Li Bingbing) is a well-educated, high-earning career woman who works as sales director for an image design company. Now 32, she has had only one love affair in her life, which lasted from the age of 18 to 25, and since then she has been very, very single, devoted to her career. Pragmatically deciding it is time to find a husband, her best friend Jin Xiaoling (Xu Jianing) arranges some blind dates, all of which turn out to be useless.
