The Car of Chance

In his will, Mr. Baird leaves his son Arnold just one seven-passenger auto and a hundred dollars to keep it filled up and in good repair. When James Bennett hears of this, he insists that Baird do something to make his fortune before he can marry his daughter Ruth. Bennett begins by using the car to start a jitney-bus line. This is not terribly impressive to Bennett -- who owns a trolley company -- and he decides he would rather see Ruth married to his controller, William Mott-Smith.

The Frisky Mrs. Johnson

Belle Johnson, a flirtatious widow in Paris for the carnival season, finds that the marriage of her sister Grace and Frank Morley is headed for trouble. Frank is very absorbed in his business, thus Grace has begun an affair with the handsome Sir Lionel Heathcote. Belle tries to save her sister from eloping with Heathcote by making him promise to drop the affair and return to England. Finding them going ahead with their plans, however, she steps in, at the risk of losing the respect of Jim Morley, Frank's brother, who has just returned from South America to ask Belle to marry him. Discovering Belle at Heathcote's apartment, Frank leads Jim to believe that she has been entirely too frisky, but Grace confesses the truth to her husband, rather than see her sister lose the man she loves. Finally, Belle and Jim go off on their honeymoon. It is a lost film.

The Water Hole

Judith Endicott, the daughter of a wealthy eastern banker, vamps Philip Randolph, an Arizonan, when he comes east to talk business with her father. Philip proposes and discovers that Judith has only been kidding him along. He returns angrily to Arizona, and the elder Endicott, accompanied by his daughter, follows him west. With her father's permission, Richard "kidnaps" Judith and takes her to a deserted Indian cliff dwelling, where she must cook and care for him. Bert Durland, Judith's fiancé, follows after her, and his Indian guide steals all of the horses. Judith and Bert and Philip start back to civilization across the desert, and Bert goes berserk from the heat. They are rescued by cowboys, and Judith returns east, "kidnaping" Philip and taking him with her.

Sauce for the Goose

John Constable, a writer, falls prey to the designs of scheming widow Margaret Alloway to the dismay of his young wife Kitty. Feigning interest in John's work, the widow offers to collaborate on his new book, Women's Struggles , but when she convinces him to dine with her on Kitty's birthday, the neglected wife decides to retaliate. After attending the opera with handsome bachelor Harry Travers, Kitty accepts an invitation to share supper in his rooms, leaving a note for her husband. Aware of Harry's questionable reputation with women, John panics, but by the time he arrives at Harry's apartment, Kitty has disappeared. Following a series of incidents in which the widow, her suitor Teddy Sylvester, Travers, and the Constables are discovered in compromising situations that actually are innocent, John realizes that he far prefers Kitty to the widow and again becomes a loving husband.

The Antics of Ann

She intercepts the letter, but her troubles are far from over.

Disgusted with his spendthrift son, Kirk Anthony's father has Kirk shanghaied and taken to Panama, where he attracts the attention of Mrs. Edith Cortlandt. He subsequently falls in love with Chiquita, the daughter of a Panamanian general, gets a railroad job through Stephen Cortlandt and decides to make something of himself when he meets Allen Allan, a black mercenary. Stephen Cortlandt's death is blamed on Kirk until Edith produces a suicide note. He succeeds in his railroad position and returns to the United States with Chiquita to ask his father's forgiveness. The story was filmed as a silent film by MGM as The Great Divide (1925) and as an early silent/sound hybrid by First National also called The Great Divide (1929). Judith Temple has come West to Arizona for some excitement. As she says goodbye to her brother and his wife, who are returning to the East, Dr. Neil Cranford, who is in love with her, is called away to tend the broken ribs of a man injured in a barroom brawl.

Across the Border

Curley Smith, a lieutenant of the Texas Rangers, gets chased by a band of smugglers after getting caught spying on them and becomes injured. Anita, the daughter of the chief smuggler tends to him and the two of them fall in love. Dean, a member of the renegade, becomes jealous of their romance, and will do whatever he can to get rid of Curley - fair or foul.
