Hank Zipzer's Christmas Catastrophe follows Hank in the run up to Christmas as he prepares for a new baby brother. But Hank's life never runs smoothly and soon Miss Adolf is turning Mr. Rock's Rudolph the Rock'n'Roll Reindeer into a one-woman Christmas Carol - two school inspectors are getting injured in a bizarre sleighing accident and Mr. Joy is trying to cancel Christmas altogether. In his attempt to drag triumph from the glittering jaws of doom, Hank will ice skate into disaster, nearly crash a Christmas tree into a crowd, get himself and his best friends arrested, get his favourite teacher sacked and lose the love of his life. This time, he really has let everyone down. Surely even Hank can't get out this one. Luckily for us, there's no way to tell Hank that.

The tragicomedy Frantic Attempts takes aim at the field of personal development, in particular, dubious therapists who offer quick fixes. After all, what if we should answer our existential questions ourselves instead of trying to find answers from others?

Excursion into Life

Felix Bressart, later one of the most delightful members of the Ernst Lubitsch "stock company," plays the title character in the Austrian comedy Hirsekorn Greift Ein (Hirsekorn Does Something About It). It's a typical worm-turns affair, as a mild-mannered provincial actor ends up working as a chauffeur for a scatterbrained female novelist. Slapstick is the order of the day, except in the scenes involving heroine Charlotte Susa. Guiding the actors through their paces was Rudolf Bernauer, a stage actor-manager of vast experience. Critics in 1931 felt that Hirsekorn Greift Ein was too thin to be stretched to 90 minutes.

The lawyer Dr. Wagner is a real disgust - neither for his employees nor for the residents of his apartment building does he have a friendly word. But when a violent pipe break in Wagner's penthouse flooded the apartments underneath on Christmas, the neighbors who had become "homeless" made a radical decision: Since Wagner refused to help his tenants, they settled under the leadership of the resolute Rita and her adult daughter Sophia without further ado with the stubborn loner - for a few happy, if not exactly quiet, Christmas holidays.

A young couple engage in a suicide pact, and slit their wrists together. However, only the woman, who is already suffering from cancer, dies. Three donors give her lover a life-saving blood transfusion. Each of the three has a rare blood type, and each has his, or her, own secrets. The trio become a target for the girl's vengeful spirit. Before matters are set right, the three victims will have been forced to donate far more than their blood.
