Roughly chronological, from 3/96 to 11/96, with a coda in spring of 1997: inside compounds of Aum Shinrikyo, a Buddhist sect led by Shoko Asahara. (Members confessed to a murderous sarin attack in the Tokyo subway in 1995.) We see what they eat, where they sleep, and how they respond to media scrutiny, on-going trials, the shrinking of their fortunes, and the criticism of society. Central focus is placed on Hiroshi Araki, a young man who finds himself elevated to chief spokesman for Aum after its leaders are arrested. Araki faces extreme hostility from the Japanese public, who find it hard to believe that most followers of the cult had no idea of the attacks and even harder to understand why these followers remain devoted to the religion, if not the violence.

Smuggler's Ransom

It is 1985 and a Cold War is raging between East and West. A young woman named Carmen, while attempting to smuggle Bibles into Romania, is captured by communist forces. Unfortunately, Carmen’s father was a Soviet Nuclear Physicist who became disillusioned with the system and defected to the West. Now, the Soviets are determined to force Carmen’s father to turn himself over to them in exchange for her life. The United States government, determined not to let the Soviets regain one of their scientists, decides to send in a lone agent to rescue her, to make sure that America does not have to pay the smuggler’s ransom.

Coldplay at the BBC

The drinks industry produces 470 billion single-use bottles each year, 25% of which come from Coca-Cola. Although the world's largest soft drink producer has set ambitious targets to prevent this environmental pollution, it has often failed to do so. In the 1950s, the company sold its drink exclusively in returnable glass bottles, which it washed and refilled. Wearing a coal-dust mask, they become ghostlike creatures. An endless line of trucks will transport all the coals and iron ores to the iron works. There traps another crowd of souls, being baked in hell. In the hospital, time hangs heavy on miners' hands. After decades of breathing coal dust, death is just around the corner. They are living the reality of purgatory, but there will be no paradise.
