The Mercenary

When a mission in South America goes wrong a mercenary is left for dead, but he is nursed back to health and reborn with a new outlook on life. But his peaceful days are short-lived when mercenaries he used to work with cross his path again and he is forced to revisit and face his own demons.

Juana moves with her son Juan from the country to Caracas in search of better work and educational opportunities. BeSound took a chance to film one of these factories during our factory inspections and surveys in Dongguan - the so called manufacturing center of China. We met and interviewed a few factory workers there. Most of them are incredibly young, and belong to the so called ‘post-90s generation’ (born later than 1990). This generation, as a result of China’s one child policy, has traditionally been claimed as ‘the little emperors’, spoiled hugely by their parents. But when they come to work and live in the factory, what is there waiting for them? Difficulties, hope, helplessness, or a better future?

The Los Angeles Times describes it as "a tumbling series of visuals with four distinct aesthetic styles. Peter Sluszka's ultra-slow motion capture of exploding mushrooms and elegantly disseminating seed pods … Julia Pott's line art of wolves and foxes hovering in geometric constellations … Guilherme Marcondes' renderings of skeletons caught among leafless branches and verdant human arms that unfurl like ferns… Santa Maria provides context…with cosmic, computer-generated vistas, cartoons of splintering bones.
