One of the greatest world-class athletes of all time, Jeff Lowe has made climbing what it is today. He contributed to the development of the modern ice screw and cam, invented the grading system used worldwide for mixed climbs, authored now classic books on climbing technique, brought the first Sport Climbing Championships to America and opened the ice park in Ouray, Colorado. In this film, Jeff tells the extraordinary story of his historic nine-day mid-winter solo ascent of the north face of the Eiger in 1991—a route he named “Metanoia”— which has never been climbed since. Jeff’s “unimaginable” new route up the Eiger prepared him for the greatest adventure he’s ever been on, the climb of his life as he slowly loses all of his physical abilities and faces his own mortality.

The Abduction from the Seraglio

Without question, this is an incredibly bizarre production. The revised storyline makes little sense, and there is a surprising amount of violence and sexual innuendo. However, the singers are superb, both vocally and in regard to their stage presence and acting, the orchestra plays beautifully, the chorus is wonderful, and the set is as clever as it is strange. It's definitely not for purists, or for someone new to this particular opera. But for someone who's seen Die Entfuhrung before, and is familiar enough with the original story to not miss it, watching Belmonte, Constanze, Blonde, Pedrillo, and Osmin embark on an entirely new adventure -- and push the boundaries of good taste -- is rather enjoyable.

In the Shadow of Karakorum

In 1954, a German-Austrian expedition led by Mathias Rebitsch set off for the difficult-to-access Karakoram Mountains, geographically north of the Himalayas. They come across the Hunza, a people who live in the valley of the same name and believe they are descended from the soldiers of Alexander the Great. The documentary conveys impressions of the poor life of the Hunza people, the harvest, a court hearing, festivals and the children's everyday school life.
