The Limits of Work

Working conditions in the worst-paid jobs in the Czech Republic were examined by journalist Saša Uhlová during six months. She spent several weeks in a hospital laundrette, poultry house, cash register or waste sorting facility. Her experience became the basis of a lived and very personal report of invisible employees working in appalling conditions. Uhlová wrote a series of reports on her project that were published on the Alarm website. Apolena Rychlíková made them into a documentary film consisting of scenes shot at Uhlová's home and video footage taken during her work. Uhlová accompanies the picture with read commentary.

Transamazonia

Melissa is 21-year-old college student and a mother, living in Para’s countryside; Marcelly, at 35, is unemployed and lives with her family in rural Amazonas. They are trans women living in different spots of the Trans-Amazonian Highway, a land where the long-awaited development has never arrived.

God Is Close

He transports passengers through the road which has been destroyed by flood on his motor bike when he meets a young girl who's the new teacher of the village school and falls in love with her. A love so pure that ends in driving him crazy and it seems like only a miracle can save him. "God is Close" is Vazirian's first feature film and it is about love from a spiritual point of view which ends to a miraculous experience.

Eugenia and John

Working as a cleaning lady, studying at university and maintaining a relationship with her high school sweetheart, John, is all Eugenia does to achieve her goal of entering medical school despite her undocumented status. When her sister gets arrested for a routine traffic ticket, she turns to John for help, but she finds that John's response is surprisingly aloof. As she struggles to prevent her sister's deportation and tries to salvage her romance with her boyfriend, Eugenia realizes that her position in America is more tenuous than she ever imagined.

The Dictator

The film depicts a dramatic episode in Danish history: the tumultous relationship between King Christian VII of Denmark and his English consort Caroline Matilda in Eighteenth century Copenhagen and the Queen's tragic affair with the royal physician and liberal reformer Johann Friedrich Struensee.

Two Days

The story concentrates on a single 48-hour period during the Russian Revolution. The central character, played by Y. E. Samchykovski, is an old servant who staunchly supports the Royal Family. Even when his master is placed in prison and his son is appointed a commissar, the servant remains faithful to the Czarist regime. But when his village is invaded by the White Russian army and his son is summarily executed, the old man realizes that his homeland is far better off in the hands of the revolutionaries, who seek to build rather than destroy. A "cleansing" fire brings this propaganda piece to an appropriately symbolic conclusion.

His brother Adam, is burdened by his father's desire for glory, and must win The Coolangatta Gold Tri-Aquathon, It is the greatest endurance test of them all: a marathon involving a 20 kilometer beach run, 6 kilometer swim and a 17 kilometer surf ski from Surfers Paradise along the golden arc of beach to Coolangatta and back to the start. The Coolangatta Gold is a story of human endeavor and endurance against overwhelming odds.

Frantz Fanon, mémoire d'asile

Using archive material and present-day accounts, the recalls the life of the Afro-Caribbean psychiatrist, Frantz Fanon. In 1953, at the age of twenty eigh, Fanon was appointed head doctor at the psychiatric hospital in Blida-Joinville, a few kilometres from Algiers. As amedical student in Paris, he had been appalled by the living conditions of the Algerian immigrants and gave over the rest of his brief life to analysing the alienation of the black man, of colonised people and man in general. The forcefulness of his writing - as in Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth - and the pertinence of his reasoning still resonate strongly into today's world.

The Slave Ship

Onimata Kan is famous for two things: a successful career writing S&M erotica, and hosting the erotic gatherings aboard what has come to be known as the Slave Ship, where the main attraction is the auctioning of the services of sexual partners willing to fulfill any desire. So if it's all consensual, there's no harm, right? At least, that's what Onimata believes until he learns that one of the frequent auctionees has gone insane, and that her husband believes the cause is related to a stalker she acquired. Are the activities aboard the Slave Ship somehow to blame? Fearing the answer, Onimata goes to investigate the mysterious Kitagawa, and soon learns that his own writings only hint at the extremes to which some will go.
