The idea for the film was proposed to the monks in 1984, but the Carthusians said they wanted time to think about it. The Carthusians finally contacted Gröning 16 years later to say they were now willing to permit Gröning to shoot the movie, if he was still interested.

Sisters

Just outside of Paris, there is a community of Benedictine nuns. They come from diverse backgrounds and do not all speak the same language. In between prayers, they work to sustain their religious community. They sell handmade rosaries and operate guest rooms where they also accommodate refugees in need of shelter, such as Halyna, who fled from Ukraine. The older nuns teach the younger ones, transcending cultural boundaries. Every day, the sisters learn to live together a little better, always following the rules of Saint Benedict, whom they have followed into this cloistered life.

The Psychedelic Drug Trial

The film follows a pioneering team of scientists and psychotherapists, led by Professor David Nutt, Dr Robin Carhart-Harris and Dr Rosalind Watts, as they compare the effects of psilocybin (the active ingredient of magic mushrooms) with an antidepressant (an SSRI called escitalopram) on a small group of participants with clinical depression. This is scientific research at its most cutting edge. With over seven million people being prescribed antidepressants each year in England alone, this drug trial is an important milestone in understanding a completely different treatment for depression.
