The Conscience

Kujtim works as a car mechanic. He makes a mistake and does not fix the brakes of a truck properly, which leads to a deadly accident. He feels guilty, but is unable to admit his mistake.

The Beginning and the End

Set in the suburbs of Cairo in the late 1930s, the story follows a middle-class Egyptian family grappling with the hardships of life after the death of their father, their sole breadwinner. The mother and her four children—three brothers and their sister, Nefisah—struggle to avoid slipping into poverty. They all go in different directions which aren't exactly good.

A Lot Like Love

I Walk Alone

Bootleggers on the lam Frankie and Noll split up to evade capture by the police. Darren Aronofsky’s AFI short opens with angry slacker Dave sitting in a dreary, empty junkyard. Dave stares into space, sips beer, and beats the hell out of a cracked guitar. We quickly realize the emptiness of the dump parallels the emptiness of Dave’s life which consists of smoking weed, staring at television screens and watching school children. Dave’s friend Pete is shortly introduced, along with their friend, Ari, who despite calling her pals losers, doesn’t seem to accomplishing much herself. These three are going nowhere fast. They’re the amoebas of life… protozoa….

Melody

Saul Sinclaire is a divorced musician that has experienced some success as a commercial composer. His life is interrupted when a 20-year-old package mysteriously shows up on his doorstep. The completely unexpected delivery is from his very first love, Melody Hall. With mixed feelings of anticipation and apprehension, he decides to try and reconnect. Almost immediately he experiences the rekindling of the relationship that had meant so much to him so many years before. However, simultaneously and almost equally unexpected, Saul is suddenly faced with some difficult career choices. This situation is almost identical in its implications as the first time he and Melody were together.

Fouad Pasha refuses to help his brother after his bankruptcy in the stock market, and his son Zaki abandons his cousin Hosnia after he assaulted and raped her, so Fouad is forced to marry her to the farmer Ibrahim, Hosnia gives birth to a baby girl, and Ibrahim doubts her lineage, so he abandons Hosnia. Over the years, Hosnia only finds work as a dancer in a nightclub, and her daughter, who is sick with tuberculosis, works as a singer.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Successful surgeon Tomas leaves Prague for an operation, meets a young photographer named Tereza, and brings her back with him. Tereza is surprised to learn that Tomas is already having an affair with the bohemian Sabina, but when the Soviet invasion occurs, all three flee to Switzerland. Sabina begins an affair, Tom continues womanizing, and Tereza, disgusted, returns to Czechoslovakia. Realizing his mistake, Tomas decides to chase after her.

Rabab

As Rabab escapes from the cruelty of his stepmother and stays with an actress, she meets the young man, Ihsan, who tries to assault her inside his car, which overturns and dies. With his father’s attempt to take revenge on Rabab, she decides to flee again to Cairo to work as a teacher there under the name (Najwa). Then she met a colleague of hers and married him.

A Plot
