Launder Run

Launder Run tells the story of Jake, a man returning to his gritty hometown after years away, carrying the weight of a troubled past. The film opens on a rainy Saturday afternoon as Jake trudges through a bleak estate, visibly exhausted and clutching a plastic bag. Arriving at his sister Sue’s chaotic, unkempt flat, he confronts the ruins of his old life—a dirty fridge, a cluttered bedroom reduced to storage, and the ghosts of a once-close family. Seeking solace, he revisits his old pub, a place teeming with memories. As he steps inside, the bartender recognizes him with shock, hinting at Jake’s mysterious past and the reasons for his long absence. “Lounder Run” explores themes of homecoming, redemption, and the unshakable grip of one’s origins.

Al materiale filmato da Gast nel 1974 a Kinshasa s'aggiungono le interviste allo scrittore Norman Mailer, ai giornalisti Georges Plimpton e Thomas Hauser e al regista Spike Lee che vent'anni dopo commentano l'avvenimento. Più che sul Mohammed Alì della realtà, è un film sul mito, sulla leggenda, sul significato simbolico, sociale e politico di Alì e della sua vittoria sul nero Foreman che paradossalmente nel 1974 incarnò l'odiato zio Sam, quell'America dei padroni bianchi che avevano ridotto i neri a loro immagine e somiglianza.

Il documentario è la cronaca di questa eccezionale impresa narrata minuziosamente grazie al diario del coraggioso sciatore, che si è lanciato in quella “pazzesca” avventura fidando solamente sulla propria forza e sul paracadute che portava sulle spalle e che solo poteva frenarne la velocità prima della insuperabile crepaccia terminale.
