L'Olivier risponde a una preoccupazione: il già debole sostegno dell'opinione pubblica francese alla causa palestinese è diminuito in seguito all'operazione di Monaco del 1972. Strutturato in modo tale da raccontare la storia palestinese e spiegare lo stato della lotta in quel momento, il film fa appello alla solidarietà militante globale e, in particolare, agli impegni politici europei.
