Il figlio di Godzilla

Un gruppo di scienziati giapponesi, guidati da Kusumi, si trova da tempo su di un isolotto del Pacifico per effettuare, per conto dell'Onu, un esperimento di ibernazione e verificare pertanto se è possibile per l'uomo mutare le condizioni climatiche nel mondo e rendere così fertili le regioni deserte. Ai ricercatori si aggrega un giornalista, Goro, il quale, benché malvisto all'inizio, riesce poi ad inserirsi nel gruppo. Questi un giorno, durante una passeggiata sulla riva del mare, vede una ragazza, che scompare improvvisamente alla sua vista, e non avendo altre prove la notizia non è creduta dai compagni. Intanto si dà il via all'esperimento, che fallisce per alcune interferenze che impediscono il contatto decisivo. Questi impedimenti sono causati dalle grida di richiamo del figlio di Godzilla, un mostro preistorico racchiuso nel suo uovo che alcune mantidi giganti cercano di rompere.

Questo organismo si alimenta con le sostanze degli scarichi industriali, e visto che il Giappone è ricco di industrie, rapidamente l'alieno, chiamato Hedorah, cresce e diventa una sorta di gigantesca ameba tossica che comincia a far strage di esseri umani mediante getti di acido capaci di corrodere una persona fino all'osso. Tra i primi ad accorgersi del pericolo c'è il dottor Yano, rimasto sfigurato da un incontro con la creatura durante un'immersione. Mentre Hedora acquista anche la capacità di volare (durante il volo rilascia gas tossici), gli umani invocano l'intervento di Godzilla. Ma neppure lui sembra essere in grado di battere Hedora...

L'impresario Kumayama esibisce alla curiosità della gente un gigantesco uovo rivenuto da alcuni pescatori sulla spiaggia di un'isola dopo una violenta tempesta. Egli non sa che l'uovo è sacro per gli abitanti della favolosa Infant Island, esseri di piccolissime dimensioni che venerano la dea falena Mothra e che guardano con ostilità gli uomini, colpevoli, tra l'altro, di inquinare l'ambiente con gli esperimenti atomici. Quando le Sobijin, due fate gemelle, vengono da Infant Island a reclamare l'uovo, Kumayama pensa di aggiungere anche loro alla sua attrazione e tenta di catturarle. Riuscite a fuggire e trovato rifugio in una foresta, diventano amiche di due giornalisti e di uno scienziato "buono" che stanno organizzando un servizio fotografico. Gli uomini promettono di aiutare le due piccole straniere, ma quando stanno per tornare in città scorgono l'immensa mole di Godzilla: il mostro atomico...

(Members confessed to a murderous sarin attack in the Tokyo subway in 1995.) We see what they eat, where they sleep, and how they respond to media scrutiny, on-going trials, the shrinking of their fortunes, and the criticism of society. Central focus is placed on Hiroshi Araki, a young man who finds himself elevated to chief spokesman for Aum after its leaders are arrested. Araki faces extreme hostility from the Japanese public, who find it hard to believe that most followers of the cult had no idea of the attacks and even harder to understand why these followers remain devoted to the religion, if not the violence.
