Un giorno si presenta al campo Michiko (Michiyo Aratama), moglie di Kaji, e viene dato loro il permesso di passare una notte insieme in un magazzino. Kaji, che è stimato per il suo coraggio nonostante le idee da comunista, viene nominato caporale, anche per cercare di piegarlo più facilmente agli ideali bellici e patriottici, fino al momento della battaglia al fronte contro i russi.
