È soltanto il primo atto e ci vuole molta pazienza, tra interruzioni varie, isterie e liti, per arrivare alla fine. La sera della prima le cose continuano sullo stesso tono, ma questa volta seguiamo quel che capita dietro le quinte. E quello è solo il secondo atto. Bogdanovich prende un originale testo teatrale dell'inglese Michael Frayn, si assicura un cast insuperabile e realizza una farsaccia deliziosa, con attori in vena.

Si assiste quindi ad un consiglio di famiglia nel quale, esclusa la zia prostituta, il figlio minorenne, quello maggiorenne che deve andare a una partita e la moglie che non ci vuole andare, a finire arrestata è l'anziana madre di Gertrude, la moglie di Toto.

Una sera però rimane colpito da una rappresentazione teatrale di Berenice e si innamora del testo e dell'attrice che ne è protagonista. Entra nel giro di attori e registi non accorgendosi di quanto questi stiano prendendo in giro la sua mancanza di cultura. Intorno a lui ruotano personaggi alla ricerca di un senso nella vita e nei sentimenti. Agnés Jaoui ha diretto con mano ferma un film che è frutto di un lavoro attento sui personaggi e di un'orchestrazione davvero magistrale per un'opera prima.

Fuori orario

Esperienze decisamente fuori dall'ordinario per Paul Hackett, introverso e ordinatissimo tecnico di computer, capitato per caso nel quartiere newyorkese di Soho. Scorsese torna agli inferni urbani di Mean Streets e di Taxi Driver, ma con meno astio e più ironia. È l'avventura, quasi hitchcockiana e un po' kafkiana, di un personaggio catapultato in un mondo non suo. Tutto da godere. Una delle grandi commedie nere degli anni '80.

Il pezzo sulla "sposa in fuga" riceve un grosso richiamo e provoca le ire del suo stesso soggetto, Maggie Carpenter, che per pronta risposta scrive una lettera di protesta in cui denuncia le bugie e lo sciovinismo di Ike. Licenziato dalla sua editrice nonché ex moglie, Ike decide così di vendicarsi a suo modo, indagando sulle precedenti relazioni di Maggie e trasferendosi nella piccola cittadina del Maryland dove lei vive in attesa di sposarsi per la quarta volta.

Grande compagnia d'attori, eleganza suprema. Bergman sostiene di essere negato all'umorismo, al registro leggero. Dopo Una lezione d'amore, questo film lo smentisce. Premiato a Cannes nel 1956.
