Da tempo il drammaturgo e regista Mimmo Sorrentino conduce, presso la sezione femminile del carcere di Vigevano, un laboratorio di teatro partecipato che vede protagoniste le cosiddette "donne di mafia", nel regime detentivo di alta sicurezza che si applica ai detenuti appartenenti alla criminalità organizzata. Ognuna delle partecipanti al laboratorio racconta a Sorrentino e alle compagne la sua storia, che viene "affidata" ad un'altra detenuta affinché la interpreti davanti al pubblico, in qualche modo facendola propria. I racconti vengono prima rielaborati da Sorrentino che, come dice lui stesso, si inserisce nello spazio fra ciò che le detenute "dicono e non sanno di aver detto", perché quello che manca loro è, i primis, la consapevolezza piena di se stesse.
