Abou-Khalil ha "costantemente cercato di creare un terreno comune tra la musica araba delle sue radici e il mondo musicale più globale di oggi." Down Beat ha elogiato la musica di Abou-Khalil come "un ibrido unico che si estende con successo nel mondo della musica tradizionale araba e jazz." Anche se ha imparato a suonare l'oud, un fretless, liuto libanese, da giovane, Abou-Khalil temporaneamente passa al flauto classico, che ha studiato presso l'Accademia di musica dopo essersi trasferito a Monaco di Baviera, in Germania, durante la guerra civile libanese nel 1978 .
