The Sheriff then arrests the Kid claiming he murdered the rancher to get the money back and that Baker said he then lost it at his gambling table.

Le donne sono state obbligate a mettere il velo ma conservano la propria dignità. Ogni giorno una nuova corte improvvisata emette tragiche e assurde sentenze. Kidane e la sua famiglia riescono inizialmente a sottrarsi al caos che incombe su Timbuktu. Ma il loro destino muta improvvisamente quando Kidane uccide accidentalmente Amadou, il pastore che aveva massacrato Gps, il bue della mandria a cui erano molto affezionati. Kidane sa che dovrà affrontare la nuova legge che hanno portato gli invasori.

Avendo recentemente perso la vista, Ingrid si ritira al sicuro nella sua casa, un luogo dove può sentirsi in controllo, sola con suo marito e i suoi pensieri. Dopo un po', Ingrid inizia a sentire la presenza del marito nell'appartamento quando dovrebbe essere al lavoro. Allo stesso tempo, il suo vicino solitario, stanco anche della pornografia più estrema, sposta la sua attenzione su una donna dall'altra parte della strada. Ingrid lo sa, ma i suoi veri problemi risiedono all'interno, non oltre le mura del suo appartamento, e le sue paure più profonde e le sue fantasie represse presto prendono il sopravvento.

Rischiose abitudini

Lilly Dillon è una bella donna che, per conto del potente allibratore Bobo Justus, fa scommesse di copertura utili ad abbassare le quote più elevate che costituiscono un potenziale rischio. Nel compiere il suo lavoro non manca di "grattare" sempre qualcosa al suo capo e tenerlo per sé. Suo figlio Roy è anche lui un truffatore che vive di piccoli colpi. A seguito di uno di questi, non andato a segno, riceve una bastonata all'addome che gli provoca un'emorragia interna che lentamente lo fiacca. Quando Lilly, solitamente operante sulla costa est, deve recarsi all'ippodromo di La Jolla, in California, e dopo ben otto anni si ferma a Los Angeles per visitare Roy, lo trova in condizioni gravissime. Chiamato un dottore della malavita, la donna riesce a salvare la vita del figlio in extremis.
