La leggenda narra che, quando il film fu mostrato la prima volta, il pubblico fuggì dal caffè in preda al terrore, perché convinti che il treno avesse potuto investiti. Anche se si pensa che la leggenda non sia altro che un racconto promozionale, gli spettatori rimasero certamente sbalorditi dalle capacità del cinematografo.

Il pinguino imperatore che vive nelle regioni antartiche deve migrare per diversi mesi in determinate zone per riprodursi e allevare i propri figli. La marcia dei pinguini segue da vicino il viaggio di una colonia e successivamente una coppia di questi che affronta diverse marce affinché il piccolo possa resistere al freddo e alla fame del periodo dopo la sua nascita. Il film mostra le sofferenze dei pinguini durante la loro riproduzione, partendo dalla marcia che dall'oceano li porterà all'interno della regione ghiacciata. Qui si formeranno le coppie che si riprodurranno e aspetteranno la nascita del loro unico figlio. Alcuni piccoli muoiono dal freddo ed il motivo è perché uno dei pinguini ha sbagliato qualche passo della loro danza facendo così cadere l'uovo nel ghiaccio e facendolo congelare... e allora la madre va a rubare il figlio ad un altro pinguino

Si tratta di un collage di vari filmati, spesso accelerati o rallentati, che vogliono principalmente raffigurare lo sviluppo della civiltà attuale così come la conosciamo noi. Il film guida lo spettatore attraverso un viaggio che inizia con la natura per passare successivamente all'intervento dell'uomo e diventa sempre più frenetico, il tutto sottolineato da una colonna sonora minimalista.
