Il 25 novembre 1970 un uomo si suicida all'interno del quartier generale del ministero della Difesa giapponese, pugnalandosi allo stomaco, come prevede il codice dei samurai. A immolarsi è il romanziere Yukio Mishima, uno degli intellettuali più conosciuti e apprezzati del Giappone. Attivista di destra e seguace dell'ideologia tradizionale nipponica, Mishima aveva creato un suo personale esercito, il Tatenokai, arruolando i membri tra le fila del movimento studentesco conservatore. E con quattro fedelissimi allievi si era barricato all'interno dell'edificio ministeriale, chiedendo ai militari di supportare la sua lotta per restaurare la società imperiale. "Con questo film ho voluto spostare la mia attenzione su un aspetto degli anni Sessanta diametralmente opposto a quello esplorato in United Red Army.
