Cina, 1944. Un gruppo di sadici soldati giapponesi gestisce un campo di concentramento in cui sono tenute prigioniere donne cinesi e americane. Una di loro ha recentemente perso il marito che prima di morire le ha rivelato di aver nascosto una cassa di lingotti d’oro in una grotta nei paraggi. Vessate e umiliate continuamente da una carceriera lesbica e torturate per futili motivi, alcune prigioniere escogitano un piano per evadere e andare a cercare l’oro nascosto.

His brother Dominic who thinks it's better to be jobless than to work an underpaid job, his patient sister Joan who works at a sari shop, his independent girlfriend Stella who feels under-appreciated by her boyfriend, his father and his colleagues, client and Stella's family. The film is very much a social commentary about Middle-class life in Bombay during the late ’70s and the conflicts arising in the labour force because workers were getting severely underpaid.
