Nel 1919, al Teatro dell'Opera di Parigi si tiene un'asta. L'anziano Visconte di Chagny acquista un carillon a forma di scimmia, che indossa abiti persiani e suona i piatti. Durante l'asta incontra Madame Giry, che ha incontrato da giovane. La loro attenzione è attratta dal prossimo pezzo all'asta, lotto 666: un lampadario restaurato di recente e adattato all'elettricità. Mentre i banditori lo illustrano, il lampadario restaurato si illumina e lentamente si alza tornando al suo posto originale tra le travi, accompagnato dal crescendo della musica, e spazza via gli anni e il degrado dal teatro dell'opera. Central focus is placed on Hiroshi Araki, a young man who finds himself elevated to chief spokesman for Aum after its leaders are arrested. Araki faces extreme hostility from the Japanese public, who find it hard to believe that most followers of the cult had no idea of the attacks and even harder to understand why these followers remain devoted to the religion, if not the violence.
