Scritto da Jerry Wald, Richard Macaulay e Robert Rossen da un racconto di Mark Hellinger, è l'ultimo grande film gangster dell'epoca d'oro di Hollywood. Riprese iniziate da Anatole Litvak. Molte qualità: perentorietà del racconto, immediatezza dell'azione, secca definizione dei personaggi. Inedito in Italia dove fu importato da RAI2 negli anni '70.

I cowboys del deserto

Due fratelli comprano un terreno che non ha apparentemente alcun valore. In realtà ci passerà una ferrovia che lo renderà prezioso. Un avventuriero è al corrente del progetto e sottrae il documento di proprietà. Ma i due fratelli lo recuperano per la felicità di una ragazza e del suo fidanzato.

Fantaghirò decide di mettersi in cammino per trovare Tarabas e durante il suo viaggio arriva in un castello, assediato dalla truppe del malvagio stregone....

Il film segna l'incontro tra Hitchcock e Ingrid Bergman, che interpreterà poi anche Il peccato di Lady Considine e Notorius. Scritto da Ben Hecht, il film è un po' appesantito dall'ingenuo sottotesto psicanalitico, ed è tra i più seriosi dell'autore. La vicenda si sviluppa come una ricerca della verità in un labirinto disseminato di simboli. Per la sequenza del sogno Hitchcock si valse della collaborazione di Salvador Dalì; per la colonna sonora Miklos Rozsa ottenne un Oscar.

Kaji non demorde mai dalla sua lotta contro la difesa dei diritti umani ma è anche tormentato dagli omicidi commessi in guerra, finché non verrà mandato in Siberia ai lavori forzati.
