Il matrimonio di Taeko e Mokichi sta passando un momento di crisi. Lei lo tratta con sufficienza, gli mente molto spesso. Lui è un dirigente aziendale dai molti svaghi, bar, ippodromi e sale da pachinko che frequenta con un amico più giovane. Nel frattempo, la nipote di Taeko, Setsuko, decide di non accettare un matrimonio combinato per non condurre una vita coniugale infelice proprio come quella dei suoi zii.
