Il pinguino imperatore che vive nelle regioni antartiche deve migrare per diversi mesi in determinate zone per riprodursi e allevare i propri figli. La marcia dei pinguini segue da vicino il viaggio di una colonia e successivamente una coppia di questi che affronta diverse marce affinché il piccolo possa resistere al freddo e alla fame del periodo dopo la sua nascita. Il film è un documentario con una trama costruita per mostrare tutti gli aspetti di questa marcia che annualmente compiono gli imperatori. Viste poetiche di tramonti sul ghiaccio si affiancano spesso a momenti piuttosto drammatici e malinconici in cui ci viene mostrato, ad esempio, come un uovo viene danneggiato dal ghiaccio o ancora come alcuni piccoli di pinguino muoiano divorati dai predatori o a causa del freddo.

Dagli anni '70 sperimenta soluzioni artistiche con materie vegetali, creando opere che portano l'osservatore in mondi "altri", "al di fuori della realtà", come dice lo stesso artista, in quanto un oggetto, in questo caso le pale del fico d'india o le foglie di palma, nel mondo della fantasia, si può rivelare "come un altro oggetto", come scrive il critico Leonardo Sole.
