Un anno dopo, l’eccezionalità del caso farà sì che lui vada ad abitare nel Midwest americano, proprio in una casa contigua, ma separata da un nefasto orto, a quella in cui vive l’anziana madre della soldatessa. La donna è disperata per la scomparsa della figlia, che dalla conclusione del conflitto, dopo aver scritto che si sarebbe sposata con un italiano, non ha più dato notizie di sé. Il giovane inizia così una tesissima ricerca della ragazza, che gli farà vivere una situazione particolarmente drammatica, fino a una conclusione, in Italia, del tutto inaspettata.
