Here, he attempts to table a law aimed at upholding the rights of what in Quebec are known as caregivers, and shows us in passing how a law whose need seems patently obvious is put together, debated, voted on and . . . dies on the battleground of French politics. A stirring documentary about social injustice that somehow manages to make us bust a gut laughing as we rage with indignation. Il cardinale Lambertini

Il film, ambientato nel 1739, tratteggia la figura del cardinale di Bologna Prospero Lambertini, che nel 1740 verrà eletto papa con il nome di Benedetto XIV. Il cardinale, molto attento alle dinamiche politiche nella Bologna presidiata dalle truppe spagnole e alle sofferenze dei bolognesi, non esita ad interporsi tra gli spagnoli ed una nobiltà imbelle pilotata dalla contessa di Roccasibalda, disinvolta avventuriera, ed il popolo, verso il quale era stata progettata una strage mascherata da tentativo di rivolta, che avrebbe dovuto essere il casus belli di una repressione e dell'instaurazione del gonfalonierato a vita di un fantoccio degli spagnoli. Il cardinale inoltre prende a cuore la vicenda di due giovani innamorati a cui si vuole impedire il matrimonio, il figlio del suo Lacchè e la figlia della contessa di Roccasibalda, anche questa con profonde implicazioni politiche.
